Marketplace scam checklist

Before buying from an unfamiliar seller, check several independent signals rather than relying on one “good sign.”

1. Compare the price

A large discount deserves an explanation. Compare the exact model, condition, included accessories, and version—not just a similar product.

2. Look at the seller history

A new account is not automatically fraudulent, but a new account plus an unusually valuable item plus an unusually low price is much more concerning.

3. Keep payment on-platform

Requests for transfers, gift cards, crypto, or “friends and family” payments can remove the protections that make marketplace transactions safer.

4. Ask for fresh proof

For higher-value items, ask for a new photo with the seller’s username and the current date beside the product.

5. Read the details twice

Watch for changing prices, currencies, model numbers, conditions, usernames, or shipping stories across screenshots and messages.

6. Know what protection actually covers

Buyer protection helps only when you follow the marketplace’s rules and the type of problem is covered. Read the platform’s current policy before paying.
